Microsoft 365 Education LTI
Last modified 8/6/2026
The Microsoft 365 Education LTI (Learning Tool Integration) provides an enhanced experience by integrating Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, and more directly into your course. This allows you to incorporate a variety of resources, including OneDrive, SharePoint, Team Meetings, and Teams.
*Note: The Microsoft 365 Education LTI is not yet available in the Illinois State University Canvas application, but will be available soon.
What is included?
- OneDrive
- Class Notebook
- Teams Meetings
- Teams
What is going away?
The new Microsoft 365 Education LTI is a unified application that replaces older, separate LTI tools. To streamline this experience, the OneDrive and Class Notebook standalone LTIs are being removed.
It is important to note that the functionality of these tools is not going away. Instead, they are being integrated directly into the new Microsoft 365 Education LTI. This means you will still be able to share OneDrive files, use Class Notebook, and create and manage class teams and schedule Teams meetings directly from your course, but you will do this through the new Microsoft 365 Education LTI.
New Features and Quick Tips
- New File Creation/Advanced OneDrive Features: You will now be able to create new content, as well as access other OneDrive features directly from the LTI within Canvas.
- File Naming: You cannot name or rename a file directly from within the LTI. To change the file name, you must open the file and use File>Rename to change the file name from the default ( i.e. Document, Document 1, etc.). You may also need to refresh the screen to see the updated file name in the LTI. For more information, please see here: OneDrive File Naming
Additional Information
- Microsoft OneDrive:
- To ensure proper functionality, access your OneDrive and have at least one file stored in it before using this LTI.
- You can also create new files directly within the LTI.
- Class Notebook:
- This tool creates a OneNote Class Notebook in your OneDrive and links it to your course. It relies on SharePoint, so it may take a few minutes to provision the notebook after the initial setup.
- Teams:
- Allows the ability to create and sync a Microsoft Team for your course allowing communication and collaboration that is kept in sync with your course roster.
Instructors wishing to have a Class Team for their course must submit a request for enablement. Additional information about the request will be available soon.
Note: Teams Meetings functionality within the Microsoft Education LTI remains available and functions independently of whether a Class Team has been created.
- Teams Meetings:
- Allows you to schedule and manage Teams meetings directly within your course. All meetings created here will automatically appear on your students' calendars.
