Respondus LockDown Browser for Students

Respondus LockDown browser is a locked browser used for taking assessments in Canvas. This app prevents you from printing, copying, going to other websites, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If LockDown browser is needed, you will not be able to take the assessment using a standard web browser.

Note

LockDown Browser can only be used with a Mac or Windows computer. Chromebooks and mobile devices will not be able to install LockDown Browser.


Installing LockDown Browser

To install LockDown Browser, do the following:

  1. Head to Canvas and log in.
  2. Navigate to the course you need Respondus LockDown Browser for.
  3. Within the desired course, find the LockDown Browser section in the left-hand Navigation bar. 
  4. Once here, if you have not yet installed Respondus, there will be a link that allows you to.
  5. Follow the link and choose the download file for your operating system (Windows or Mac).
  6. Follow the download and installation instructions. 
  7. Respondus LockDown Browser is now installed on your computer. It will be now available as an application on your computer and within your Canvas courses. 

If the link provided in Canvas does not allow you to install LockDown Browser, do the following:

  1. Go to Downloads
  2. Scroll down to the Respondus LockDown Browser section. 
  3. Click the link for your computer operating system under the Respondus LockDown Browser heading.
  4. Navigate through the installation process.
  5. Respondus LockDown Browser is now installed on your computer. It will be now available as an application on your computer and within your Canvas courses. 

Using LockDown Browser

To use LockDown Browser, do the following:

  1. Close all open programs.
  2. Locate the LockDown Browser application on your computer.
  3. If prompted, click Yes to close any blocked program, or you can close LockDown Browser to close the programs before restarting.
  4. You may be prompted to choose an e-learning platform, if so choose Canvas in the drop down menu and log in to the Central Login prompt as usual.
  5. Navigate to the appropriate exam/quiz you need to take and, if prompted, enter the access code supplied by the instructor and click Begin Assessment
  6. Your exam will now start, and you will be unable to exit the program until the Submit for Grading button is clicked.
  7. After submitting the exam, close LockDown Browser.
