Microsoft 365 Education LTI - How to add a file to Module

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to add files from the Microsoft 365 Education LTI into your Canvas modules.

Note: When you add a OneDrive file directly to a Canvas module via the Microsoft 365 Education LTI, it is automatically created as an assignment with a non-zero point value, you can later change the point value to zero; see instructions below.

To add a new section to a new module


  1. In Modules, click the + button.
  2. Choose Create page and type a new for the new page.
    Note: If you try to create an external tool, Canvas will force you to create a page first.
  3. Click Add Item.
  4. After the module is created, click the pencil icon to edit it.

To add a Document from Microsoft 365 Education to a Module


  1. While editing the new module, select the External Tool button in the rich text editor.
  2. Choose Microsoft 365 Education and select your document.
  3. You will be asked if you want to embed the document (which will display it on the page) or link to it (which will display a hyperlink).
  4. Once you've made your selection, click Save and Publish.
    Note: In your modules, icons with a Pencil and paper represent Assignments, while icons with just a paper are documents.

Change the Assignment Point Value to Zero

To change the point value of a created assignment to zero:

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Points field and change the value to zero.
  4. Click Save.
