Understanding the Voice Mail Message Retention Policy
Last modified 9/20/2023
The campus voice mail system will store your voice mail messages for a period of time before automatically deleting them.
Deleted Voice Mail
When you delete voice mail messages, they are not permanently erased from your voice mail mailbox. Instead, they are moved to a trash mailbox and can be recovered at a later time. Deleted voice mail messages still count against your total voice mail storage. For more information, see the following article:
If you receive a lot of voice mail messages, you may want to permanently erase them after deleting them. This will free up space in your voice mail mailbox for new messages. If you do not take steps to permanently erase deleted messages, the system will automatically do this for you after a period of time, as explained below.
Automatic Voice Mail Removal
To help you manage your voice mail, voice mail messages are automatically saved after a period of time and are eventually deleted. The stages of automatic voice mail removal are described below.
- Any voice mail messages marked as new will be marked as saved after aging 30 days.
- Any voice mail messages marked as saved will be marked as deleted after aging an additional 15 days.
- Any voice mail messages marked as deleted will be permanently erased after aging an additional 15 days.
This means that if you receive a voice mail message but do not act on it, it will be automatically erased after a total of 60 days.
Note
Before the voice mail system makes the automatic changes described above, it will notify you three days in advance.
