Vocareum is a cloud-based learning tool that provides hands-on labs and development environments. Vocareum allows instructors to provide programming, data science, cloud, and other technical activities through a web browser.

Vocareum integration with Canvas allows instructors and students to access Vocareum activities from within Canvas.

Depending on how the Vocareum course is configured, grades may also be sent to the Canvas gradebook.

What can you do with Vocareum?


Vocareum can provide students with access to: 

  • Programming and coding environments
  • JupyterLab and notebook environments
  • Cloud resources
  • Databases
  • Virtual machines and other lab environments
  • Other hands-on learning activities

The available tools depend on how the Vocareum course is configured.

Add Vocareum to your Canvas course?


Instructors can add Vocareum to their Canvas course by following the instructions below:

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course.
  2. In the course navigation on the left, select Settings.
  3. In Course Settings, select the Navigation tab.
  4. Scroll down to locate Vocareum in the hidden items section.
  5. Drag Vocareum to the visible items section above.
  6. Select Save at the bottom of the page.

Vocareum will now appear in the course navigation bar on the left.

What Happens to Grades?


Vocareum can send grades to the Canvas gradebook when the Vocareum assignment is correctly connected to a Canvas Assignment.

To use grade passback, the Canvas Assignment must use External Tool as the submission type and be connected to the vocareum assignment.

The available grade options depend on how the Vocareum assignment is configured.

Troubleshooting

  • Vocareum does not appear in my Canvas course


If Vocareum does not appear in the hidden items section of the Navigation tab in the Course's Settings:

  • Make sure you are in the correct Canvas course.
  • Refresh the Canvas page.
  • Contact Illinois State University technical support for assistance.

  • Students cannot access Vocareum


Make sure:

  • Vocareum is visible in the course navigation.
  • The course is published.
  • The student is enrolled in the Canvas course.

If the student still cannot access Vocareum, please have the student contact Illinois State University with all available information.


Available Support for Vocareum


Illinois State University (ISU) technical support can assist with:

  • Finding Vocareum in Canvas
  • Adding Vocareum to a Canvas course
  • Accessing Vocareum from Canvas
  • Basic browser issues
  • Basic Canvas issues

ISU technical support may not have access to the Vocareum platform. As a result, ISU technical support may not be able to troubleshoot problems within Vocareum.
