How to use the Android built-in mail app to obtain your Microsoft 365 email
Note:
There are many different versions of Android. The steps within this document are based on the latest version released by Google, so your device might have a slightly different set of fields.
To set up email on your Android:
- Tap Settings > Accounts > Accounts > Add account → Email > Office365.
1a. Select Corporate if you are running an older version of Android. - Type your full campus email address, for example "rrbird@ilstu.edu."
- Select Work or school account.
- Enter your ULID (only the first part of your email address, "rrbird" in the above example) and password, and then tap Log In.
- When prompted for by the MFA challenge, click to Approve the login.
- If prompted to confirm you are trying to sign into your email account, tap Continue.
- If prompted to Apply security settings, tap Apply.
- Review the setup options and make any desired changes.
- Click Done when finished with settings.
- If prompted to Edit names, you may rename your email account as you would like it to appear in your email app. Click Done when finished.
Your account has now been configured. When you launch the email app, your newly added account will now appear in the list of accounts in the app.
Not Working?
Make sure you entered your email and password correctly and try again.
Effective July 26th, 2022, ISU email users configured for older legacy authentication will no longer receive new email to clients configured in this way. Users will need to remove/re-add their ISU email accounts to their email client in order to be able to view their new email in the client. Some older Android email clients may not support our modern authentication configuration. Affected Android users may wish to switch to the Gmail or Outlook email clients on their Android devices if they are unable to use their Android client with the newly required modern auth standard.
Activate Phone Administrator Notification
You may receive a notification, which states, Activate device administrator? Activating administrator will allow Email to perform the following operations:
- Erase all data
- Set password rules / Limit password
- Monitor screen-unlock attempts / Watch login attempts
- Lock the screen / Force lock
- Set lock-screen password expiration
- Set storage encryption
- Disable cameras
- Turn off functions on lock screen
The security options shown above are handled by the Microsoft 365 server and are applied only at your request. For example, if you lose your Android device, you can request to have the device locked and have all data erased. These security options will never be used without your approval. Click Activate to activate administrator, or Cancel if you do not wish to activate administrator.

Sync Microsoft 365 Calendar to Your Android Device
If you have already configured your Android device for Microsoft 365, but did not choose to sync your Microsoft 365 calendar to your device, you may choose to do so later. In order to do so, you may go into your device Settings, select your Microsoft 365 Exchange account, and in Account Settings, select to sync your calendar. If you are using a 3rd party app for email, such as Microsoft Outlook for Android, you may need to navigate to the settings for the app and select to sync your calendar.
