Accessing AVD: A Guide to Different Clients
Last modified 4/7/2026
This document provides an overview of the various ways to connect to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and highlights the optimal client for your needs.
Understanding the Options
You have several choices when it comes to accessing your Azure Virtual Desktop environment. Each offers a unique user experience with varying levels of performance and features.
Windows App (Recommended)
Description: The Windows App is the primary gateway for connecting to AVD and other remote resources. It provides a unified, streamlined interface and integrates seamlessly with your operating system. It is available for Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and in web browsers.
Best for: All regular AVD users seeking the most modern features, including enhanced security and simplified navigation.
Considerations: This app replaces the legacy Remote Desktop client.
HTML Access (Basic)
Description: Access your AVD environment directly through your web browser without downloading or installing any software. This allows for platform-independent access from any device with a compatible browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari).
Best for: Quick access, temporary usage, or when using a device where you cannot install software.
Considerations: May offer limited functionality and performance compared to the dedicated Windows App.
Important: Remote Desktop Client End of Life (EOL)
The legacy Remote Desktop (MSRDC) client is End of Life. Users should transition to the Windows App as soon as possible to ensure continued support, security updates, and access to new features.
- Action Required: If you are currently using the "Remote Desktop" application to access AVD, please download and switch to the Windows App from the Microsoft Store or the official Microsoft download page.
- For ISU-owned devices, the Windows App may be found in Software Center (Windows) or Self Service (macOS). Please check with your local IT support for more information.
Important Notes
- Compatibility: Ensure your chosen client is compatible with your operating system and network environment.
- Mobile Access: For mobile devices (iOS/Android), look for the "Windows App" in your respective app store.
