Export and Import Contacts in Outlook for Windows

This article explains how to export and import your address book using Microsoft Outlook for Windows.


Export your Address Book

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click File Open & Export →  Import/Export (Figure 1).

  3. Choose Export to a FileNext (Figure 2).

  4. Choose Comma Separated ValuesNext.
  5. Locate Contacts in the Folder Listing and then click the option to Highlight it (Figure 3).

  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Browse to select the location the file will be saved to → Next.
  8. Click Finish.

You have successfully exported your contacts from Outlook.


Import your Address Book

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click File Open & Export →  Import/Export (See Figure 1 above).
  3. Choose Import from Another Program or File Next (Figure 4).

  4. Choose the appropriate File Type to import from and then click Next (Figure 5).

    Note:

    Comma Separated Values is selected by default and is the most common file type for saved contacts.

  5. Click Browse and Select the File to import.
  6. Choose the desired file, and then click Next (Figure 6).

  7. Choose the Contacts Folder by clicking it to highlight it. 
  8. Click Finish.


You have successfully imported your contacts into Microsoft Outlook.

Exporting and Importing Contacts in New Outlook for Windows

If you are using the new version of Outlook for Windows, exporting and importing contacts is not supported. If you want to export or import your contacts you will need to switch back to the old version of Outlook.  To do this, click the toggle switch in the upper-right hand corner next New Outlook (Figure 7).
