Setting Do Not Disturb on an Android Device

Last modified 9/18/2023

Do not Disturb is a feature on mobile devices that silences incoming calls and notifications. This can be used to ensure that a phone will not ring during periods of time during which you do not want to be disturbed, such as during a meeting, presentation, or at night. With advanced configuration, it is possible to set up exceptions to Do Not Disturb. This way, you can ensure that even in Do Not Disturb, you still receive critical calls and communications.

Setting Do Not Disturb

To access the Do Not Disturb menu, swipe down on the status bar, then hold down on Do Not Disturb. If you are unable to find Do Not Disturb on the status bar, it can also be accessed by going to Apps →  Settings Sounds and vibration →  Do Not Disturb.

The following options are present on the page and will help you customize Do Not Disturb:

  • Turn on now: Turns ON or OFF Do Not Disturb with your current settings.

  • Turn on as scheduled: Allows you to specify certain times to enable Do Not Disturb.  You can set days as well as a start and end time.  Do Not Disturb will be turned on at the applicable times with your current settings.

  • Allow Exceptions: is set to ‘No exceptions’ by default, which means that while Do Not Disturb is turned on, all calls and notifications will be muted. Alarms Only will allow any alarms that have been set to function normally, but will still mute all other features.  Custom enables you to further customize what notifications are allowed with the following constraints:

    • Alarms: Allows any alarms to go through, functioning the same as the Alarms Only option

    • Repeat Callers: Allows calls to go through if they have been received from the same phone number more than once within the last 15 minutes.  This allows filtering of normal priority phone calls, but allows emergency or high-priority calls to get through.

    • Calls From: Allows you to whitelist certain groups to allow calls through Do Not Disturb.
      • All: Will allow any calls through.
      • Contacts Only: Will allow calls from any phone number associated with a contact in your contact book.
      • Favorite contacts: Will allow only numbers associated with a favorite contact to bypass Do Not Disturb.
      • None: Will not make any exception for calls.

    • Messages from: Functions the same as Calls From but applies instead to text messages.

    • Event/task alerts: Allows for notifications set in your Calendar to bypass Do Not Disturb.

    • Reminders: Allows applications that have Reminders configured to send them while Do Not Disturb is enabled.

    • Priority App Notifications: Allows you to enable applications as priority, which will allow notifications even if Do Not Disturb is on.

  • Notification pop-ups: Allows you to turn ON or OFF visual notifications.
    • Show when screen is on: Toggles between showing and hiding notifications in the status bar or lock screen.
    • Show when screen is off: Toggles the LED notification indicator.
