Microsoft Teams Voice

Microsoft Teams Voice allows employees to place and receive telephone calls using their university phone number directly within Microsoft Teams. Users can make calls from their computer, mobile device, or compatible headset without requiring separate phone calling software.

Note: Illinois State University will begin cutting some departments over to Microsoft Teams Voice for phone services beginning in July 2026. If your area has not yet been cut over to this service, you will not be able to use the functions below in Microsoft Teams. If you are unsure if you have been cut over to Microsoft Teams Voice, please reach out to the Technology Support Center (contact information below).

What is Changing?


The following changes will occur as part of this project:

  • Personal and direct telephone numbers will be moved to Microsoft Teams Calling.
  • Users will make and receive calls through Microsoft Teams.
  • Voicemail will be managed through Microsoft Teams.
  • Calling functionality will be accessible from desktop and mobile Teams applications.

What is not Changing?


The following is not part of this phase:

  • Department contact center functionality
  • Existing Phone queues

  • Will my phone number change?

No, existing personal and direct telephone numbers will remain the same unless otherwise communicated.

  • Can I use Teams Voice on my mobile device?

Yes, Calls can be made and received through the Microsoft Teams mobile application.

  • Will I still use Cisco Finesse?

Yes, users who work with Contact Center operations will continue using Cisco Finesse.

  • Can I make calls from outside the office?

Yes, Microsoft Teams Calling allows you to make and receive calls from any location with an internet connection.
