Call Transfering in Microsoft Teams Voice
During an active call in Microsoft Teams Voice, you can transfer the caller to another user using either a warm transfer or cold transfer.
Note: Illinois State University will begin cutting some departments over to Microsoft Teams Voice for phone services beginning in July 2026. If your area has not yet been cut over to this service, you will not be able to use the functions below in Microsoft Teams. If you are unsure if you have been cut over to Microsoft Teams Voice, please reach out to the Technology Support Center (contact information below).
Cold Transfer
Use a cold transfer when you want to immediately transfer a caller to another user without speaking to the recipient first.
- During an active call, select Transfer.
- Select Transfer from the transfer menu.
- Enter the target user's name or ULID.
- Select Transfer to complete the transfer.
Once the transfer is completed, the call is disconnected from your Teams client and rings on the recipient's client.
Warm Transfer
Use a warm transfer when you want to speak with the recipient before transferring the caller.
- During an active call, select Transfer.
- Select Consult then Transfer.
- Enter the target user's name or ULID.
- (Optional) Select Open chat to send the recipient a Teams message and discuss the transfer before connecting the caller.
- When ready to complete the transfer, select Transfer from the upper-right corner of the chat window.
Once the transfer is completed, your connection to the call ends and the caller is connected directly to the recipient.
