- Before You Begin
Degree Planner is intended to support academic planning. Use it alongside advising guidance, degree audit information, and registration tools.
Before using Degree Planner:
- Confirm that the correct academic program or plan is selected.
- Review your degree requirements in your official degree audit, if available.
- Check whether your completed, in-progress, and transfer courses appear as expected.
- Review any advising recommendations or required course sequencing.
- Consider prerequisites and course availability before moving courses between terms.
- Make sure your planned course load is realistic for each term.
- Remember that adding a course to Degree Planner does not register you for the course.
Degree Planner can help you organize your academic path, but it does not officially change your degree, enroll you in courses, or guarantee that a planned course will be offered in a future term.
- How to use Degree Planner
1. Select your academic program
Use the program menu at the top of Degree Planner to select the academic program you want to view.
If you have more than one program or plan, make sure the correct option is selected before reviewing progress or making changes. Degree Planner displays requirements, planned courses, and progress information based on the selected program.
2. Review your academic progress
The Progress section summarizes your current status in the selected program.
Progress may include:
- Completed units or requirements
- In-progress coursework
- Planned coursework
- Remaining units or requirements
- Any other required units for the selected program
Use this section to get a quick view of where you stand before making changes to your plan. You may also Simulate GPA to estimate how future grades may affect your GPA.
NOTE: This option is used for planning only. Simulated GPA information does not change your official academic record.
3. Review your planned terms
Degree Planner organizes planned coursework by term.
Each term may show:
- Term name
- Current term indicator
- Planned course count
- Planned unit count
- Maximum units for the term
- Requirement information
- Course subject and catalog number
- Course title
- Units
- Any other term-specific actions
Use the arrow next to a term to expand or collapse the term details. (Figure 1)

4. Add courses to a term
Use the Add a Required Course or Add An Elective Course buttons within a term to add a course to that term.
After adding a course, review the term total to confirm the course was added to the intended term.
5. Preview your Plan
Select Preview Plan to review your academic plan before using it for advising, registration planning, or further updates.
Previewing your plan can help you confirm:
- Courses are assigned to the correct terms
- Unit totals look reasonable
- Empty terms are intentional
- Planned courses align with your academic goals
- Requirements appear as expected

Previewing a plan does not guarantee that planned courses will be offered, available, or open for enrollment in a future term.
- What-If Paths
A What-If Path lets you preview how your completed, in-progress, and planned coursework may apply to a different academic program or plan.
Use a What-If Path if you are considering changing your degree, major, concentration, or academic plan and want to see how your courses may fit into the new requirements.
When to use a What-If Path
You may want to use a What-If Path when you are:
- Exploring a new major or program
- Considering adding or changing a concentration
- Comparing academic paths
- Reviewing how completed courses may apply to another plan
- Preparing for a conversation with an academic advisor
What a What-If Path can show
A What-If Path may help you review:
- Requirements for the selected program or plan
- Completed coursework that may satisfy requirements
- In-progress or planned coursework that may apply
- Remaining requirements
- Possible changes to units or course planning needs
NOTE: A What-If Path is for planning only. It does not officially change your degree, major, concentration, catalog year, or academic record.
