Remembering your Multi-Factor Authentication Verification Method

Last modified 5/12/2022

After enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and setting up your devices you will use to approve sign ins, you will be required to utilize MFA when logging in to or using a Microsoft 365 application (e.g., Word, Excel, OneDrive, etc.) from an off-campus location. Verification methods may be remembered up for up to 60 days, so you do not need to approve your sign in every time you access a Microsoft 365 service. It is important to keep the following items in mind when using the option to remember your verification method:

  • Sign ins must be verified for each individual Microsoft 365 application that you use. At each instance of a sign in on these applications, you will be asked to authenticate your log in. (Once for OneNote, once for Teams, once for Word, once for Outlook, etc.).
  • If you use a Microsoft 365 application in one internet browser, then use a different Microsoft 365 application in a different internet browser, you will be prompted for verification again - once for each browser.
  • You must check the "Don't ask again for 60 days" option at log in if you do not constantly want to be asked for authentication at log in.

Your option to 'Remember for 60 days' will be reset if you clear your cache or log in using a different browser or a private browser.

To remember your verification methods, do the following:

  1. Log in to Microsoft 365 from an off-campus location, or from a Network other than ISUNet.
    • If you are on campus and would like to mark your device to be remembered, you may go to ULID Account Management and manage your devices through the Multi-Factor Authentication section.
  2. Before approving your sign in on your selected device, click the checkbox next to 'Don't ask again for 60 days.'
  3. Proceed with approving your sign in.

After approving your sign in, you will be directed to the website or app you were attempting to access and your sign in will be remembered until the 60 days have been met or one of the actions listed in the beginning of this article were met.

Be sure to mark the option to Remember your Device and approve your sign in before the maximum amount of time for approval ends, approximately 20 seconds for phone call or Text verification and 55 seconds for mobile app verification. Failure to do so will result in the verification process needing to be repeated.
